Secure Communities: Sheriffs speak out

June 7, 2011 – Fox 25 Morning News

Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick is making sure Massachusetts will not take part in a federal program intended to round up violent illegal immigrants.

Patrick says he always felt the "Secure Communities" program was bad public policy and recently dropped the federal program after learning it was voluntary.

It's a move applauded by immigrant and civil rights advocates who say the program sweeps up too many people who are not criminals and discourages people from reporting crimes. But not everyone agrees with the governor.

Bristol County Sheriff Thomas Hodgson and Plymouth County Sheriff Joseph McDonald stopped by the FOX 25 Morning News to talk more about this topic.
